Gloucester Blocks 6th/7th February Results Print
Written by Administrator
Tuesday, 09 February 2010

The first four sessions of the 2010 Gloucester Blocks age group events took place at GL1 on 6th/7th February. It was a great weekend for the club with many fine swims and some really good times. There were 114 swims in total with a very good 80 PB’s. The swimmers as always behaved beautifully and gave team mates their full support.

In the 10 years boys age group Barnaby Taylor won gold in the 50m breast and Sam Marshall won bronze medals in the 50m free and 50m fly. In the 10 year girls age group Jorji Longdon won a bronze in the 200m free and then went one better to win silver in the 400m IM. This was a stirring performance in what is a tough race for a 10 year old and it was good to see the whole team at the end of her lane cheering her on.

In the 12 year girls age group Abi Bowring was in top form and exceptionally won seven gold medals, a clean sweep. Championship finals are held in every event for the top eight 12/over girls (13/over for boys). Abi qualified for the finals in the 100m and 400m IM and came 7th in both in very good PB’s. This is an exceptional performance for a 12 year old.

In the 15 year girls age group Jane Garry took silver in the 50m breaststroke and bronze in the 100m breaststroke both in PB’s.

In the 16 year girls age group Katie McLernon won bronze in the 50 backstroke in a PB.

In the 17 year girls age group we had two swimmers in the medals. Rebecca Allen won gold in the 100m breaststroke (in a dead heat with Rebecca Guy) and silvers in the 50m free, 50m breaststroke and 100m IM. She gained a very creditable 6th place in the 50m breaststroke championship final. Rebecca Guy won 7 gold medals in this age group for another clean sweep for BHSC. Rebecca was in awesome form this weekend and went on to win four championship finals in the 50m free (in a national qualifying time), 50m breaststroke, 100 IM and 400m IM, a quite exceptional achievement .

In the 17 year boys age group Luke Porter won bronze medals in the 50m and 100m breaststroke both in PB's.

In the 18yrs/over girls age group Maddy Williams took a well deserved bronze in the 50m backstroke.

There are top 8 ‘finalist’ medals awarded in the younger age groups. Matt Eskell swam some great races in excellent PB’s and won no less then five finalist medals. Other finalist medals were won by Jorji Longdon (2), Sam Marshall (2), Charley Waters, Morgane Sha’ban and Jess Hicks.

Medal Tally:- 16 Gold, 5 Silver, 8 Bronze and  12 top 8 junior finalists.

Championships:- 4 Gold

All swimmers times can be found on the BHSC database and full results can be found on the county results website <here >.

Cotswold Round 1 Report Print
Written by Administrator
Monday, 08 February 2010

A good solid team performance gave BHSC a well deserved second place. The rules of the Cotswold league mean that we cannot use any swimmers who have taken part in a national league gala in the last two years which makes the result all the more special. There were 29 PB’s out of 36 individual swims which is magnificent. Individual winners were Ellen O’Regan, Morgane Sha’ban, Chloe Paddock (2), Rosemary Mustard, Angus Rowley, Ted Blackmore, Sam Youngman and Keshan DeAlwis. The team behaved impeccably and spendidly supported one another throughout so well done everyone. The gala result was:-

Cheltenham                                      160

Bristol Henleaze                              149

Bridgewater                                       103

Minehead                                             78

Four Seasons Gala 30th January Results Print
Written by Administrator
Sunday, 31 January 2010

This was another very close fought four seasons gala with only a few of points between first and second place throughout the events.

We had 3 swim school swimmers competing in their first gala for the club, Jennie Rosser, Jemma Woodley and Eddie Holbrook and they did the club proud so well done to them.  We achieved 25 PB’s on the night with Jennie gaining a 5sec PB in her 25m back,  Molly gaining a 2sec PB in her 50m back, Daniel Greaves gaining a 4sec PB in his 100m IM, Daniel Hibbard gaining a 5sec PB in his 50m free and Eddie gaining a 2sec PB in his 25m free.

Archie Watts had a great evening and broke 8 yr old club records in the 25m back and 25m fly.

A big thanks to the helpers on the night; the swimmers loved having them around with Curtis forming some sort of singing choir with the male swimmers on poolside.

In the time honoured tradition the team manager was chucked in at the end of the night.

Results:

Bristol Henleaze                              177 points

Backwell                                              168 points

Bishopsworth                                    149 points

Clevedon                                            135 points

Burnham                                             121 points

Gloucester Blocks February 6th/7th GL1 Print

I now have the cards for the first weekend of the Gloucester Blocks at GL1 and Kelly Longdon or I will get them to you next week at club. The warm up schedule has been posted on the Gloucester County Blocks web site and can be found <here>.For those new to the Blocks and GL1 I give some instructions below and if you have any queries please feel free to contact me.

Gloucester Leisure complex (usually referred to as GL1)

 Bruton Way

 GL1 1DT.

One suggested route to GL1 is to take M5 North to junction 12 then head for Gloucester on the A38. After about 3 miles take a right turn at traffic lights onto the ring road. Follow the ring road for about 2 or 3 miles, crossing several roundabouts and ignoring signs for the city centre until you reach a set of traffic lights in a shopping area with stores such as Currys and Staples. Turn left towards the city centre on the A4302, Metz Way. Follow this road, passing the ASDA superstore on your left, to traffic lights at a T junction where you turn left into Bruton way. GL1 is a short distance along on the right hand side. This is a dual carriageway and you need to go through the first traffic lights before you can do a U turn to get back to GL1. There is parking at GL1 but it fills up very quickly, On Saturday the best place to park is the railway station since it is £2.50 all day (well it was last year) however this does fill up and if you are swimming in the afternoon it may be best to use one of the pay and display car parks behind GL1. To get to the station - after passing ASDA turn right at the T junction towards city centre on Bruton Way and it is on the right hand side it is well signed, easy to find and a few minutes walk from GL1. To get to the pay and display car park go towards the station and instead of turning right into the station turn left and follow the signs. If you are short of time it is possible to drop the swimmer at the door then find somewhere to park. On Sunday parking is free on the streets and car parks around GL1 but the station still charges.

The journey should take about 45 minutes from Bristol and there is a map on the GL1 website. Please be warned that there are speed cams on the ring road (40 mph) and one near ASDA (30 mph).

On arrival swimmers should post their card, (the posting boxes are at the entrance to the changing rooms) if the card is not posted then you cannot swim. Then get changed and make your way to the poolside and look for the BHSC coaches/Chaperones. They will supervise your warm up, make sure you know when your event is and generally look after you.

Parents should make their way to the spectator area upstairs.

Swimmers should bring a drink and some food (there may be a long wait for your event so pack a snack as well as something for after your swim). Don’t forget your kit and any spares (goggles etc.) you feel you may need.

Good luck to you all.

Brian Guy.

Weston Super Mare Easter Open Meet Print
Written by Brian Guy
Thursday, 14 January 2010

The next open meet that BHSC are attending is the Weston Super Mare Easter Open Meet – Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th April 2010 at Hutton Moor.

Full meet information can be found  <here> . The club will as usual put in the entries electronically and all you need to do is download an entry form, fill it in and return it to Kelly Longdon at a session together with a cheque payable to Bristol Henleaze Swimming Club. Please ignore the WSM swimming club instructions to return the form to them. We are producing entry packs which are available from Kelly at sessions.

This is a level 3 meet and has both upper and lower limit times. Swimmers must submit times above the lower limit (L) otherwise their entry will not be accepted. Swimmers must also submit times below the upper limit time (U) but these are very fast and should not come into play. You can find your times on the club website bristolhenleazesc.net under BHSC results database (you must first register to access the database). If you do not have times on the database and wish to enter then please have a word with Coach Bob.

We would like to take as big a team as possible so all swimmers who qualify are urged to enter especially the longer (200m) events.

If you have any queries then please contact me.

The deadline for return of forms is Friday 12th February 2010.
