A few people have asked about the criteria used in Swim School to group the swimmers. We have to admit that to some extent it is dictated by the group sizes and available places - there is a limit to how many swimmers we can fit in the pool, and how many under one teacher. However, we do have an overall strategy provided by the ASA and reproduced below. Swim School aims to cover ASA stages 4 to 7, but the colours are our own invention, and though these are the targets for each group, the teachers also exercise their own judgment and we often feel that waiting for a swimmer to get 100% coverage would be detrimental to their progress. In addition, to prepare them for Junior squad, we also expect black and red hats to have very good front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke technique, plus tumble turns and competitive dives.
