We are delighted to report that Luke Porter has been awarded an Oxford University blue for swimming. Luke is in his first year studying Biochemistry at Corpus Christi college. He took part in the varsity match against Cambridge last weekend which was enough to earn him a half blue but Luke went one better and swam the 100m breaststroke in a superb PB of 1.07.96 which was inside the time standard for a full blue. Luke has also represented Oxford University at the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) swimming championships. Another former Bristol Henleaze swimmer, Maddy Williams, is in her second year at Leicester University studying Geography. Maddy has had the distinction of being appointed Leicester University ladies swimming captain. Maddy recently represented Leicester at the BUCS long course championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield. Another name known to many of you, Rebecca Guy, studying Philosophy and Spanish at Manchester University also swam in the BUCS long course championships. Rebecca won the 50m freestyle in a PB of 26.00 seconds which is a championship record. Look out for Rebecca in the British Championships (Olympic trials) in two weeks’ time. These three illustrate that swimming careers can continue to develop after leaving school and it is hoped that their successes will inspire others to follow in their footsteps. If anyone has news of other Bristol Henleaze swimmers at University then please let us know. |
