Written by Administrator

Friday, 11 February 2011

Round 2 of the Cotswold League took place on Saturday 5th Feb at Easton. Although we faced tough opposition, our swimmers rose to the challenge and gained PB’s in 22 of the individual events.  PB of the night goes to Ben Murphy who improved his time for 100 IM by a whopping 21seconds!

Individual winners on the night were:

Lara Coode, who won both freestyle and breaststroke in the 13/u age group, Jono Dixon in the 15/u 50m butterfly and Jo Rapoport in the 15/u 50m freestyle.  In the most exciting race of the night, Jono stormed past all of the other competitors in the final length, to win the 100m butterfly in the open age group.

At the end of the evening we finished in 4th place with 94 gala points, but capped many new swimmers and gave valuable experience to our young team.  With our toughest 2 rounds behind us, we can look forward to Round 3 on Saturday March 19th, when we will be hosting the gala at Backwell pool. Watch out for the team sheet which will be available soon.

Gloucester Blocks first weekend report

Written by Administrator

Wednesday, 16 February 2011

The first four sessions of the 2011 Gloucester Blocks age group events took place at GL1 on 12th/13th  February. It was a great weekend for the club with many fine swims and some really good times. There were 85 swims in total with a very good 69 PB’s. The swimmers as always behaved beautifully and gave team mates their full support.

In the 9 years girls age group Alysia Maestri in her first serious competition swam superbly to win gold medals in the 50m free and 50m breast plus a top 8 medal in the 200m free; in the breaststroke she set a new age group best time and she was only nine a few days ago. Alysia has had a great start to her swimming career. She was ably supported in this age group by Oriana Munden who won two top 8 medals being placed 4th in the 50m free and 6th in the 200m free. In the 11 year girls age group Jorji Longdon continued to dominate in the longer events and some exceptional swimming netted her 3 golds in the 200m free, 200m IM and 400m IM to add to the two golds she won in the distance events (800m and 1500m free) in December. Also in this age group Ellen O’Regan won a finalist medal with a 6th place in the 50m breast. In the 12 year girls age group Charley Waters won a finalist medal with 7th place in the 50m fly. In the 13 year girls age group Abi Bowring was in top form despite a broken finger! and exceptionally won seven gold medals, a clean sweep. Championship finals are held in every event for the top eight 12&over girls (13&over for boys). Abi qualified for the championship finals in the 50m back, 50m breast, 100m IM and 400m IM. In the 400m IM final she took an excellent 3rd place and was crowned county junior champion. In this age group Abi was supported by Morgane Sha’ban who won a finalist medal in the 50m back. In the 16 year girls age group Jane Garry continues to make very good progress and was rewarded with gold in the 50m breast and bronzes in the 50m free, 50m fly and 100m IM. Our lady Captain Rebecca Allen chipped in with silver in the 18 year girls 50m free.

In the 11 years boys age group Barnaby Taylor won silver in the 50m breast and Sam Marshall won silver in the 50m freestyle. In addition Sam won two top eight medals in the 200m free (4th just missing out on a podium place) and 200m IM and Barnaby won a top 8 medal in the 50m free. In the boys 15 year age group Matt Eskell continues to impress and won bronzes in the 50m back and 50m fly. In the boys 16 year age group Oliver Eyre swam very strongly giving 100% effort as he always does to win three silvers in the 50m fly, 200m fly and 400m IM. Oliver also made the championship finals in the 400m IM (4th) and 200m fly (5th). In the 50m free Oliver won a bronze and tied for 8th place overall so went into a swim off for the last championship final place and in probably the most exciting swim of the weekend he was beaten by 1/100th of a second – you can’t get closer than that!

All results are on the BHSC Results Database and please remember that you need to register on the wesite to access it.

Thank you to Bob, Hilary, Kathryn, Kelly, Sandra, Tina and the club captains who looked after the swimmers.

Finally congratulations again to all swimmers who qualified, took part and gave us performances of which we can all be very proud.

Gloucester Blocks Roundup 2011

Written by Brian Guy

Wednesday, 30 March 2011

The Gloucester County Championships are over for another year. Firstly I would like to say congratulations to all swimmers who qualified and took part. There were 191 swims in all and a very creditable 159 PB’s. The swimmers as always behaved impeccably and were often to be seen at the end of the lane cheering on their team mates.

Some of our Medal Winners 2011

In the 9 year girls age group Alysia Maestri swam outstandingly to win five gold medals and one silver medal; she also set two age group best times in the 50m and 200m breaststroke. Alysia has had a great blocks and an excellent start to her competitive swimming career. Alysia celebrated her ninth birthday during the blocks so she was only 8 for the first events therefore quite some achievement. Oriana Munden did some excellent swims and gained three top 8 finishes and Grace Caple the third girl in this age group swam a PB in the 50m free.

In the 10 year girls age group a delighted Isobel Press won two top 8 medals. She was ably supported in this age group by Rhian Hughes (2 PB’s) and Lauren Millard (1 PB).

In the 11 year girls age group Jorji Longdon had an exceptional championship winning eight gold medals and one silver medal as well as four top 8 finishes. Jorji swims with great technique and always impresses with the effort she puts into each and every swim. She also achieved seven qualification times for the South West Regional Championships which take place in June. Also in this age group Ellen O’Regan continues to impress gaining two top 8 finishes and five PB’s. Rebecca Wheatcroft the third girl in this age group did a PB.

In the 12 years girls age group we saw some strong swimming from Charley Waters to win two top 8 medals and do five PB’s. Maddie Nairn continues to improve and had six PB’s including a 24 second PB in the 400m freestyle.

In the 13 year girls age group we have become used to exceptional swimming from Abi Bowring but it is difficult to find superlatives to describe the competition she has had. Her achievements speak for themselves – seventeen gold age group medals (a clean sweep), she qualified for twelve championship finals and won two silver and two bronze medals, twelve Regional qualifying times, top 13/under girl and four national qualifying times. Abi does all this in a very calm and mature way and is a credit to herself, her parents and our club. I am sure you will join me in wishing her well when she swims in the Regional and National championships. In the same age group Morgane Sha’ban swam extremely well to win three top 8 medals and do eight PB’s.

In the 14 year girls age group Jess Hicks is getting back to form and strong swimming netted her seven PB’s and she was absolutely delighted to achieve two Regional consideration times. Also in this age group Holly Tanner contiues her impressive progress and swam strongly for six excellent PB’s.

In the 16 year girls age group Jane Garry had a great competition with two gold and four bronze medals as well as the trophy for the top breaststroker. Jane also achieved four Regional qualifying times and three Regional consideration times.

In the 18/over ladies age group our lady club captain Rebecca Allen chipped in with a silver medal.

In the 11 years boys age group Sam Marshall did some excellent swims to win a silver medal and a bronze medal as well as five top eight finishes and six PB’s In the same age group Barnaby Taylor swam strongly to win a silver medal and had three top 8 finishes and four PB’s. The third swimmer in this age group Sam Youngman swam very well to gain one top 8 finish and three PB’s.

In the 13 years boys age group Daniel Hibbard recorded a PB despite having missed training through illness.

In the 15 years boys age group Matt Eskell kept up his impressive progress with two bronze medals and no less that five Regional consideration times, well done Matt. Also in this age group Jono Dixon’s swimming has come on in leaps and bounds and posted three PB’s. The third member of this age group was Curtis O’Connor who also had three PB’s.

In the 16 years boys age group Oliver Eyre has struggled with illness and injury but nevertheless swam with great courage and commitment to win five silver medals and one bronze medal. Oliver also made two championship finals and had a 4th and 5th place. He also achieved four Regional qualification times and no less than eight PB’s. These are very fine achievements and we wish him well for the Regionals. The other swimmer in this age group was Eddy Wragg and it was a pleasure to see him win his first county medal in fact he won three bronze medals. Eddy had a very impressive eleven PB’s and three Regional consideration times.

In the 18/over mens age group our captain Guy Pearce has come back well from his injury last year to record four PB’s get a Regional qualifying time and two Regional consideration times. He was supported in this age group by Luke Porter who had the misfortune to damage his wrist early this year but nevertheless won a bronze medal and posted a Regional qualifying time.

The total medal count in the age group events was 54 – 32 gold, 10 silver and 12 bronze which is excellent. Some of our senior swimmers moved on last year and it was great to see our younger swimmers doing so well.

I would like to say a big thank you to the coaches, teachers and helpers who looked after the swimmers so admirably and I would also thank the parents for their commitment and dedication to the swimmers which makes their achievements possible.

3 Towers Meet Millfield Report

Written by Administrator

Friday, 15 April 2011

Well there was nothing Spring like about this Open meet, the weather was positively Summer like with temperatures reaching 20 degrees plus outside the pool and the swimmers, coaches, helpers and parents were able to grab a few moments of sunshine on the grass and enjoy their picnic style lunches and grab a taste of the weather that everyone else was enjoying.

The atmosphere at Millfield is like no other and an experience that not all Swimmers are lucky enough to have and this was the first time at Millfield for some of our swimmers. It certainly did not disappoint.

There were 5 Bristol Henleaze swimmers in total, all swimmers were impeccably behaved and supported one another throughout the races and this was great to see.

Representing the Boys was Zak Elliot in the 12 year old age group and Daniel Hibbard in the 13 year old category.

In the Girls 12 year old age group was Molly Huckle and Maddie Nairn and in the 9 year old girls age group Alysia Maestri.

At 9 years old and Alysia’s first swim competitively in a long course pool one can not underestimate the results that she achieved. To be able to do this with such composure and a smile was a credit to Alysia and the club.

There were medals to be picked up for the fastest 6 competitors with Maddie Nairn picking up 2 Bronze medals for her 50 Free and 100 Free along with place medals for finishing 5th in the 100 Back and 6th in the 50 Breast.

Molly Huckle took 8s off her 200 free time and attacked from the start giving a very strong swim in a large popular competitive age group.

Zak Elliot also did a great 200 free swim knocking off 7s from his entered time.

Daniel Hibbard just missed out on place medals coming 7th in the 50 Fly and 8th in the 100 Freestyle.

Alysia managed to bag a Gold in the 50 Breast, 50 Free and 200 Free along with a Silver for her 200 Breast just missing out on the Gold by less than a second but with a much better technical swim. To add to this there was a Bronze for her 200 back and 5th place medals for the 50 Back and 50 Fly.

The Open meets are a great chance to compete and gain experience and it would be great to see more Bristol Henleaze swimmers take on the challenge.

Individual results can be found on the data base.

A huge well done to all and thanks to all that contributed.

Tina Huckle.
