Gloucester Blocks Report

Written by Jez Birds

Sunday, 06 April 2014

Another great couple of weekends for Bristol Henleaze swimmers at the March instalment of the Gloucester Blocks: there were championship gold medals for James Edmonds (100 Br – Not bad for a backstroker!!); Abi Bowring (200 IM and smashing her PB by 6 seconds in a thrilling 200 Br race IN A TOP 10 Nationally ranked time of 2.36.93) as well as a bronze medal for James in both 100 and 200 Bk and a silver for Abi in the 100 Br. There was a silver medal for Matt Bray in the 100 Fs who was only just touched out for the gold by 3/10th of a second and two inaugural sub minute swims from Annie Brown to finish 3rd in her 100 Fs final with a personal best of 58.76. Bartek Karpisz was in FLYing form winning the championship 100m fly in a County record time of 55.05, with Matt Bray taking the bronze in a personal best 56.67.

In the youngest age group there were 4th and 6th place finishes for Eliza Barrett and Francesca Gilpin respectively in the 10 years 100m freestyle and a 7th place finish for Luca Gunawardena in the same event – all swimming miles faster than their previous best times! Saskia Maestri placed 8th in the 200m breast in a best time of 3.42.65 and Francesca and Eliza were back in the medals with a silver and bronze respectively in the 50m back, alongside a 6th place from Lulu watts and Laura Waters (11) in the same event. A time of 1.27.33 saw Francesca once more in the medals with a bronze in the 100m back and a 1.28.93 was the deserving time of another bronze for Frankie this time in the 100m IM. Frankie capped off some great results with yet another silver medal in a brave 100m fly!

Will Darby won a bronze medal in the 17 years 400m free with Alysia Maestri and Orian Munden placed 4th and 6th in the 12 year old girls version and an 8th place for Molly Huckle in the 15’s!! Sam Marshall finished 8th in the 14 years 100m breast and Jono Dixon received a 3rd place in the 18 and over event. In the same girls event Oriana dropped nearly 3 seconds to win a bronze just touching out Alysia in to 4th and Lucinda Larnach (13) finished 8th in a great personal best swim of 1.27.92. Maddie Nairn (15) was placed 5th and Annie Brown was the 17 year old champion.

In the 200m back Oriana won a silver medal with a 9 second PB and Alysia finished 7th, equalling her best time and Jess Hicks (17) came 5th. Bartek Karpisz was awarded the 18 and over gold in the 200m IM with Jono Dixon taking 4th and Oriana and Alysia once again up at the top with a silver and 4th respectively as well as a bronze medal for Holly Tanner (17). Oriana and Alysia were once again in action (tough schedule!!!!) in the 100m free, earning a bronze (Oriana) and 5th (Alysia) and a 5th place for Maddie Nairn who is quickly getting close to breaking the minute barrier! Holly Tanner also PB’d to finish 2nd in the 17 years age group.

The places were reversed for once more for Alysia and Oriana in the 200m breast, this time with Alysia taking the silver medal, knocking 3 ½ seconds off her best time with Oriana coming in 4th – Oriana doubling the 4th place up with the 200m free where Alysia was placed 8th; Maddie Nairn (15) finished 7th whilst Holly Tanner and Jono Dixon both picked up bronze in the 17 year old and 18 and over age groups. Rory Maxwell finished 7th in the 13 year olds 100m fly in an event that saw gold for Matt Bray in the 17 year age group; Gold, Silver and Bronze for Bartek, Jono and Jimmy Flanaghan in the 18 and overs; silver for Oriana; bronze for Abi Bowring in the 16s and a magnificent Gold for Holly in the 17 years.

Sam Youngman was in the medals with a 7th place finish and a near 8 SECOND PB in the 14 year olds 100m back; Will Darby (17) was 6th; Oriana took the silver; Alysia came in 5th; Maddie 7th and Jess Hicks with a blocks highlight personal best swim of 1.14.41 finished 4th!

A BIG congratulations to all those swimmers achieving a top 8 finish and a big well done to all those swimmers achieving personal bests: Well done to Leonie Milne (100 IM, 50 back, 200 back); Catherine Brooke (with the unluckiest birthday at the blocks – in effect swimming against girls a year older than her – 100 IM, 200 back, 100 free); Grace Caple (200 back, 100 free, 200 free, 100 back); Lewis Gledhill (100 free); Maddie Hollick (200 and 100 back, 100 and 200 free); Robbie Mcleod (100 free); Rebecca Wheatcroft (200 IM, 100 and 200 free, 100 and 200 back).

Magnificent swimming from ALL at BHSC – total PB tally through the roof (I lost count somewhere in the hundreds) - bring on the relays…

3 Towers Spring Open Meet 2014 Millfield 50m Pool, 5/6th April 2014

What a great weekend of racing at the 50m pool Millfield, which took place over the whole of the weekend and what a start to the holidays it was!

There were so many Pb’s, too many to mention in this short report but every swimmer can be proud of their achievements. For some it was the new challenge of swimming in a 50m pool for the very first time and for others it was a personal best journey. Regardless, all that competed should be extremely pleased. Big thanks to all that gave up their weekend to support the swimmers, Tina & Hilary poolside whilst Brian Guy and Julie Hibbard, who despite having no swimmers at the meet represented the club by officiating.

Cotswold R3 report

Written by Richard Edwards

Tuesday, 08 April 2014

This gala was the held at Pontypool Active Life Centre and was the third of the Series of 5 galas, the final gala to be held on Saturday May 17th.  In the Series there are 20 clubs from the Gloucester and Somerset area. These galas are the designed to give good club swimmers and inexperienced swimmers the chance of taking part in competition galas. At the end of first 4 rounds of the Series the total number of gala points gained by each club is calculated. The 5th round of the Series consists of three finals. The top 8 clubs swim in the A Final, the middle 6 clubs in the B Final and the bottom 6 clubs in the C Final. The teams we were against for this gala were Cwmbran Otters and Bristol North. Severnside|Tritons who were scheduled to swim withdrew from this gala. This gala being held at the start of the Easter Holidays meant many of our swimmers were not available due to Holidays, School trips and family commitments. Many of our swimmers in this gala had to swim up into higher age groups. This was happened in 13 individual events and 21 relay legs.

To their great credit they achieved 12 PBs from individual swims, 3PBs from the first leg of the relays, 7 first places in individual swims and 2 relay 1st places.

The individual wins were:-

Two for Lucinda Larnach in the 13/U and 15/U 50m Breaststroke.

Two for Grace Caple in the 13/U Freestyle and 13/U Backstroke.

Will Darby in the 100m Open Backstroke.

Francesca Gilpin in the 11/U 25m and Catherine Brooke in the 11/U 25m Backstroke

The Relay wins were:-

The boys 11/U Freestyle  team of:-

Lewis Gledhill, Joey Brayley, Jude Hall and  Luca Gunawardena

The Girls 13/U Medley Relay team of:-

Grace Caple, Molly Wilkins, Lucinda Larnach and Lola Worthington

The Draft results for the teams on the night were

Cwmbran Otters         163 point

 Bristol North              147 point

Bristol Henleaze        100 Points

Severnside Tritons      DNS

So after the first three rounds we have a total of 341 points which is 30 points more than after the first three rounds last year so we are still going in the right direction. We now move on to Round 4 on Saturday April 26th at Bridgwater.  Bridgwater are hosting and the two other teams we are against are Dursley Dolphins and Cinderford. This is the last gala before the final in May and the last opportunity for new swimmers to become eligible to swim in the final.

Cotswold Round 4 - Report

Written by Richard Edwards

Sunday, 27 April 2014

This gala was the held at Trinity Leisure Centre Bridgwater and was the fourth of the Series of 5 galas, the final gala to be held on Saturday May 17th. The teams we were against for this gala were Bridgwater, Dursley Dolphins and Cinderford.  In this gala unfortunately we had none of our eligible male and female open swimmers available. This meant we had to ask other swimmers to swim up. In 8 open events we asked our 11/U swimmers to swim. To their great credit they swam and gained our team valuable points.

Our team achieved 12 PBs from individual swims, 8 first places in individual swims and 4 relay 1st places.

The individual wins were:-

Two for Catherine Brooke in the 11/U 25m Freestyle and11/U 25m Backstroke

Two for Dan Hicks in the 13/U 50m Breaststroke and 13/U 50m Butterfly.

Two for Eloise Molyneux-Gibbs in the 13/U 50m Freestyle and 13/U 50m Butterfly

Luca Gunawardena in the 11/U 25m Backstroke

Lucy Thornton in the 11/U 25m Breaststroke

The Relay wins were:-

Girls 11/U 4x1 Medley Relay team of Saskia Maestri, Lucy Thornton, Francesca Gilpin and Eleanor Brighton

Boys 11/U 4x1 Medley Relay team of Joey Brayley, Luke Taylor, Jude Hall and Luca Gunawardena.

Boys 13/U 4x1 Freestyle Relay team of Dan Hicks, Oliver Baker, Rory Dunbar and Paddy Heath.

Boys 11/U 4x1 Freestyle Relay team of Finley Green, Luke Taylor, Finlay Morrow and Luca Gunawardena.

The Draft results for the teams on the night were

 Cinderford                  135 point

 Bridgwater                 133 point

 Dursley Dolphins       129 Points

 Bristol Henleaze        114 Points

So after the first four rounds we have a total of 455 points. Only swimmers that have swum in at least one of the first four rounds are eligible to swim in the Finals on Saturday May 17th. I will get the details of our final and our team selection out as soon as possible. I would add I thought our team on the night swum really well in difficult circumstances. I was very proud of the effort they put into their races and their team spirit.

Four Seasons, 12th April 2014 - Report

Written by Sandra

Sunday, 27 April 2014

We travelled to Clevedon with a very small team of around 18 swimmers with only Grace and Oliver as 12 year old swimmers.

We had 24 first places out of 51 on the night which was outstanding.  We managed 15 PB’s for individual races with PB’s of the night going to Megan Hornung with a 7.80 PB in her 25 back, Sophie Hornung 8.01 PB in her 25 breast, Lewis Gledhill 8.44 PB in his 100IM, and Ines Borkowska  7.72 in her 25 fly.

We dominated in the relays winning 11 out of the 17 relays with an amazing win in the canon at the end, winning by a whole length.

Well  done to our swimmers that swam in their first four seasons gala, Megan and Sophie Hornung, Ines Borkowska, Kieran Gallagher you all swam amazing and were excellently behaved throughout the gala.

It’s sad to lose 2 excellent swimmers of Grace Caple and Oliver Baker who swam in their last Four Season gala.

We were in the lead after 4 races and then the gap just got bigger and bigger with us winning by a staggering 37 points.

Unfortunately the night ended on a downer as we were not allowed to jump in at the end with the lifeguard at the pool being rather rude to us about this.  Apparently this was due to the pool booking ending but I will be following this up with the Club as another minute would not of made much difference and would of saved a lot of disappointed swimmers.

Thank you to all the helpers on the night.

Well done Team.

Provision results:-

Bristol Henleaze       205

Burnham                   168

Backwell                    141

Bishopsworth            127

Clevedon                   114
