Another season is now officially underway, with the Henleaze Challenge Shield proving yet again the kick off point to the 2014/5 competitive season. It marks a busy period in the calendar – with novice, junior, league and cup fixtures, mingled with one or two open meets, setting the landscape for the foreseeable future. But Saturday’s shield clash was a great opener, with some of the toughest competition in the South West descending on Horfield Leisure Centre to battle for the glory.

The gala proved a real mixed bag of results, with a nice set of victories across all competing teams, and each able to showcase great talent and enjoy a very close share of the spoils. Albeit on the night Soundwell were deemed the strongest of the bunch claiming overall victory, the up and down close battle for 2nd place was eventually sneaked by Clevedon, after a great run of first and second places through the final few events. Weston Super Mare just held on to 3rd spot, pipping Henleaze into 4th by just 9 points. Only 12 points separated all three teams vying for 2nd spot!

The victories were kicked off for Henleaze with the Mens 4x100 Medley Team of James Flanaghan; Michal Kotlewski; James Edmonds and Matt Bray followed immediately with a hatrick of wins from Eliza Barratt; Luca Gunarwardena and Alysia Maestri in the girls and boys 10/11 yrs 50m Backstroke and girls 13U 100m Breaststroke respectively. There was a second honour shortly after for Matt Bray (Mens 100m Butterfly) followed by a win for Oriana Munden in the girls 13U 100m Backstroke. Luca Gunarwardena then picked up his second victory in the boys 10/11 yrs 50m Freestyle before the two big relay wins in the Ladies (Molly Huckle; Abi Bowring; Holly Tanner; Oriana Munden; Maddie Nairn; Annie Brown) and Mens (Matt Bray; James Flanaghan; Sam Marshall; James Edmonds; Michal Kotlewski; Jez Birds) Open 6x50m Canon Relays!

All of the swimmers competed with excellent team spirit with some fantastic debut swims and a nice few PBs – which are always welcome so early in the season! The gala was again a terrific event, run so well by all the parent helpers and volunteers and once again all deserve great praise for their efforts!
