On Sunday 18th January the Gloucester County Blocks kicked off with their 800 (female) and 1500 (male) distance events. For the first time also this year the event was held in a long course (50m) pool at Hengrove Leisure Centre in Bristol, and was hosted by none other than our very good selves!
The distance events are always very tough and take years and years of mastery to get the pacing spot on and to build the levels of specific endurance required to be a world beater (just ask Rebecca A)!!! But our guys, for some of which it was their very first time, particularly in a 50m pool, really rose to the occasion and though we were few in numbers, all participants - Will Darby (19:37.03), Luca Gunarwardena (5th - 22:59.56), Rebecca Wheatcroft (6th - 11:07.33), Lucinda Larnach (9th - 11:15.61), Molly Huckle (7th - 10:41.90) and Francesca Gilpin (4th - 12:25.11) - swam out of their skins. Once their achieved times were converted (to compare them to their previous short course bests) the virtuosity of the performances was enhanced further! Well done swimmers on very brave and committed swims and congratulations on your success! A big thank you also to all helpers who mucked in on the day and made the event possible - now bring on February for the sprint events!!
