LEGENDS PROGRAMME

“I’m a huge believer in giving back to the community and the world – think globally, act locally I suppose! I believe that the measure of a person’s life is the affect they have on others”

Steve Nash, NBA Star

At BHSC we aim to provide the appropriate and most opportunistic pathway to all swimmers of all abilities with a view to catering for all progressions within the sport. For some this is high level competition; for others fitness and lifelong learning and often for some a happy medium between the two. Either way we hope to promote a lifelong passion for swimming and a culture whereby as swimmers progress thorough the Club they have the opportunity to assist with the development of younger swimmers and help them through the same pathway.

From initially supporting Duke of Edinburgh Award Schemes and encouraging older swimmers to take ‘buddy’ roles at club meets and training sessions, in 2018 we developed the Legends Programme that offers workforce development to young athletes and provides opportunities to develop leadership and management skills as well as training to become a qualified teacher and/or coach.

How does it work?
Every year a new quota of positions will be made available for application. Any swimmer aged 15 or above within the programme can apply, however, depending on number of applications, a limit may apply.

Successful applicants (Legends) will agree with the Director of Swimming (DoS) a suitable session(s) in which they can assist and - along with the support of the poolside coaches and mentorship - they will then be enrolled on to a Teaching Aquatics course where they will be given the tools, knowledge and qualifications to confidently work on poolside and enhance both their personal and professional development.

Once they have completed their Level 1 course in Teaching Aquatics the Legend will then be eligible to progress onto the Level 2 qualification that will allow them to lead sessions and take on more responsibility.

As a qualified teacher there will added incentive as the Legend can choose to extend their session coverage and become a paid teacher for the extra that they do.

What does it cost?
The cost to the successful applicants is simply their time to devote back to the Club in assisting with teaching and coaching sessions. It will be expected that a minimum of 1 hour per week in this manner will be required. The Club will then cover all costs associated with training.

At age 18, Legends can continue their coaching journey through our Coach Apprenticeship Programme
